Chapter 9 The Door Ajar: How to Use the Flower Essence Chapters

“He who has imagination without learning has wings but no feet.”

-Fortune cookie

A flower essence is like a multi-faceted gem, each surface representing different subtopics under a single theme. For instance, Strawberry’s theme is dignity. Issues of self-worth, maturity and poise are but a few of its facets. I have attempted to reveal the dimension, color and life of each essence in the following chapters.

These essence chapters have been a great challenge for me and an even greater joy. In the process of writing them, I’ve learned more than could be told words. I have sculpted the essences in literary clay, as it were, interpreting them at greater length for the first time. Also, I have attempted to give them both wings and feet, that they might alight on the flowering of your own understanding. Rather than presenting definitive, all-conclusive statements that would only confine the essences in tiny, finite boxes, I have offered at times metaphors, stories and famous quotes, somewhat like the literature from the Orient, that leaves the door ajar to further understanding.

Chinese writing differs from that of the Occident. It harbors a deliberate ambiguity-one that, paradoxically, seeks to clarify rather than to confuse. Instead of literally translating an experience by mere definition, the Oriental description of a healing art offers a parallel. It paints
a picture and relates a parable. Take, for example, the acupuncture point named after a particular rock. There is a kind of rock, affording shelter from the wind, that juts up from a river. This story-scene is a metaphor for a particular turning point in our lives; symbolic of a crossroads, it refers to a time when decisions are made.

The information you are about to read is gleaned from over three decades of collected research. I hope this book, like the rock in the river, will be a turning point for you and a new beginning of a continuous stream of expanding awareness.

FLOWER /FRUIT/FOLKLORE Corresponding to the flower illustration and the Latin description of each essence plant with its English translation, here you will find facts about the tree or plant from which the fruit grows as well as the blossoms themselves, and historical information about the plant’s origins. Flower and fruit folklore abound through the ages, passed down from generation to generation. Humanity’s innate wisdom authors these not-so-mysterious myths, catching their thread of truth through the tree, plant, flower and fruit. Here also, you will find nutritional information and health benefits of the food sources.

QUALITY /MESSAGE /PATTERN (QMP) This section refers to the Quality, Message of Self-Mastery and Pattern of Disharmony provided for each essence, offering a helpful essence summary. Its purpose is to give a brief introduction to, and synopsis of, the essence. Quality: The essential nature of each Spirit-in-Nature Essence, summarized in a word or two. Message of Self-Mastery: The beneficial effect of the essence, resonating with, and thereby awakening, that quality within us; the vibrational quality of the essence.

Pattern of Disharmony: Indicates the need for a particular essence;

a negative habit, i.e., weakness or imbalance, strengthened through repetition.

To summarize: the Message of Self-Mastery is the essence quality that connects us to our own source of perfect well-being, and the Pattern of Disharmony is the ingrained habit that separates us from our inner joy.

SPECTRUM PLACEMENT This brief section reviews the essence’s Spectrum position in relation to those that precede and follow. It explains both the essence’s individuality and its connection to the larger picture in terms of the Spectrum’s Quadrants and halves.

POSITIVE APPLICATIONS A text version of the Message of Self-Mastery, this section explains the positive essence state. I have added stories, quotes and occasional humorous anecdotes where helpful. The Message of Self-Mastery, Positive Applications and Positive Expressions sections together offer a more complete view of this positive essence state.

NEGATIVE INDICATIONS The word “indication” simply means “the need for.” We may understand this part of the chapter as an expansion of the Pattern of Disharmony section with examples, quotes and direct testimonials added when appropriate. The Pattern of Disharmony, Negative Indications and Negative Conditions sections are all designed to present a picture of the need for a given essence from different angles. If they seem a bit on the harsh side, remember that we are working with degrees. Date’s negative judgmentalism, for example, may manifest as a deeply critical nature or just a passing unkind thought. Remember that we want to identify negative traits, not identify with them.

You may want to refer back to the “Theme and Plot Essences” chapter as you study the next three sections in each of the essence chapters. I have devoted several sections of each essence chapter to the subject of theme essences because: (1) the concept and terminology for a positive type remedy are new and are virtually unpioneered in the flower essence world; and (2) understanding these themes will be an important part of your flower essence work with yourself and others.

The physical and psycho-emotional traits of each theme, plus the magnetism they project to others, are covered under this subtopic. Although the positive theme characteristics are explained here, please remember that we can also exhibit our theme’s negative side, i.e., pushiness for Grape or absent-mindedness for Avocado. This simply means that we have not yet perfected our theme essence quality. The negative theme essence characteristics are identical to the plot essence indications, i.e., Pattern of Disharmony, Negative Indications and Negative Conditions sections. Also, remember that these theme characteristics are generalizations. Not everyone with bowed posture, for example, is a Banana theme.

FAMOUS THEME PERSONALITIES Here, I have listed several famous personalities who richly exemplify the different themes, profiling the first in detail. Our subjects include historical personages, presidents, scientists, fictional characters, heroes, heroines, saints, sages, movie stars, rock stars and sports stars. Although it was nott possible to interview the people listed here-since they were either inaccessible or long gone-I have assessed their themes from reliable literature either by or about them, and sometimes both.

CONFESSIONS OF A THEME ESSENCE TYPE Having heard from the famous, I then added this section as a more informal sharing. In other words, if an essence had a voice, what would it say? Here, you will read a direct first-person account from each theme type, in their own words. In addition to each person’s unique

brand of charm, these theme individuals articulate their own levels of clarity about themselves. Their testimonies reveal a focus on both the positive and negative aspects of their theme essences. The Pineapple theme, for instance, dialogues her sense of insecurity, although she more than hints at a strong sense of self-knowing. Through these peoples’ own words, we are given a bird’s eye view of their strengths, their fears and their stories. The individuals interviewed were not told their theme essence until the end of the session. During the course of the interview, they were asked questions similar to those in the theme and plot chapter under “How to Determine Your Theme Essence.”

WRAPPING IT UP To complete the text section of each chapter, several paragraphs tie together the salient points previously explained. I have also used this section to take the liberty of relating interesting folk tales or sometimes to illustrate the Doctrine of Signatures that, in Spirit-in-Nature Essences, applies to the fruit as well as the flower, plant and tree. This summary section conveys a vibrational portrait of the essence in its entirety. Having been dissected in a sense, here it is put back together.

CONTRAST/COMPANION CHART When two people join together, a third entity-their relationship- is created. Such is also the case when two flower essences pair off, as explained in this section. The first, or contrasted essences column, distinguishes those essences that are similar, parallel or even seem to duplicate one another. Subtle yet definite differences set them apart. Paradoxically, these same pairs also make excellent companioned essences, as shown in the second column. Companion essences are those that bond especially well with each other. You might say they vibrationally walk arm-in-arm together and can be taken in close proximity timewise, i.e., finishing one and immediately beginning the next. Consider, for example, Almond and Tomato. These two essences are contrasted: Almond addresses self-control in overcoming immoderate

habits and behaviors, whereas Tomato helps to battle addictions and, over time, eliminate them. Almond offers a completely different approach than Tomato toward overcoming obstacles-Almond, energetically inward and upward; Tomato, a straight-on approach. The two also make excellent companion essences because they apply to similar issues. When used in close proximity in time, they aid in the development of psycho-emotional health.

POSITIVE EXPRESSIONS Here we find the positive qualities of each essence that we exhibit when acting in harmony with it, and thus with our true nature. This section, as in Negative Conditions below, lists the essence qualities in adjective form. You will notice some overlap here of the same quality for several essences. For example, both Corn and Pear share the positive quality of willingness, though with slightly different expressions. Corn captures the quality of free-flowing, accessible energy; Pear’s counterpoint is the willingness born of resolved conflict and/or resistance.

NEGATIVE CONDITIONS This section overlaps the Patterns of Disharmony at the beginning of the chapter. What the Patterns of Disharmony section describes in phrases, the Negative Conditions section lists mainly in single adjectives. The latter is intended as a reference guide, or a mini-index. (See the appendices for the complete index.) Please note: you will find some duplication of terms with the Qual-ity/Message/Pattern description in both this section and the next. Each, however, has a different intent. The QMPs provide an overview of the essence to introduce the chapter, whereas the Negative Conditions and Positive Expressions sections are intended to be used as a handy, at-aglance reference. The Grape chapter, for example, catalogues thirty-two negative indications-not to be elucidated in a book of this size! Also, some essences have shorter lists than others. This is no indication of
their importance; they simply require fewer words. And remember that the presence of even one Pattern of Disharmony is reason enough to administer that essence.

ESSENCE ENHANCERS The purpose of this section is twofold: (1) to offer supportive measures to supplement the essences you are taking; and (2) to support you as holistically as possible. In other words, instead of only taking the essences four or more times a day, experiment with the Essence Enhancers. They can help you to be more mindful of the issues you are working on. Taking action imprints needed lessons into our conscious and subconscious minds. The more consciously you work with the essences- instead of expecting them to work on you or in place of you-the more quickly and dramatically you will see results. Some people even like to wear the color of the essence they are taking as a further reminder. Try eating more of the corresponding food as another way of tuning in to the essence. You may want to sample some of the recipes in the appendices as well. Consider spending some time with theme essence individuals who are strong in the essence in your program. These living embodiments of particular essences provide us with examples of that essence’s message. In the presence of Corn themes, for instance, we absorb their raw energy and enthusiasm; in Date themes’ company, their contagious sweetness and acceptance of others. Also, let common sense be your guide. Some Essence Enhancers apply across the board-proper diet, rest and exercise for the body; a positive environment, an anti-stress schedule and other self-nurturing measures for the mind; and meditation for the spirit. These activities, as well as the individual visualizations and affirmations, may accompany all of the essences and thus are not listed specifically unless they especially enhance particular essences. Finally, listen to and sing your essence songs (see Products and Programs, page 345). These “aural affirmations” are imbued with the vibrations of their corresponding
essences. You will also want to read and review the chapters about the essences you are taking. The chapters themselves are written with the vibration of their corresponding essences. Reading about Cherry may actually cheer you, whereas the Avocado chapter is intended to act as a “mental pencil sharpener.”

Also, feel free to create your own “designer Essence Enhancers.” This is basically a “whatever works” section.

VISUALIZATION Visualization employs our faculty of imagination that, in Italian, is called la fantasia. Some people are better at this than others, perhaps because they are more visually oriented. This section acts as a sort of visual affirmation by conjuring a mental image, described as vividly and storylike as possible. Basically, it serves to get us out of our minds and into a feeling of the essences.

AFFIRMATION Each essence is interpreted as an affirmation. Trying saying it as you take your drops. (See pages 276-277 for an explanation of affirmations and also our Affirmation Deck in Products and Programs, with more information on our website.)

I have attempted to write the following twenty chapters from within the secret heart of each essence. Acting as their interpreter, I have translated their unique vibrational articulation into the medium of words. No doubt, you will see in them a little of yourself, family, friends and clients. Above all, don’t get discouraged by imperfection! We are all on a journey toward Self-realization. At various stages in our lives, different essences will come into play. In time, with effort and grace, we will find ourselves expressing their radiantly beautiful qualities and becoming our own living blossoms in the process.
